Murder rate soars...country averaging 2 homicides per month
In one night, Antigua and Barbuda’s
murder rate shot to a record 16
for the year and has left citizens reeling over the dramatic events that
left two men dead in the space of a couple of hours.
It gets worse. The figures now show that the country has recorded some
29 murders in the space of two years, with incidents between September and October
pushing the figure past last year's 13 recorded killings.
While citizens contemplate the state of affairs, even the police can no longer
feel protected as one of their own came face to face with the gunmen who carried out a
reign of terroron a number of citizens, besides those who
they allegedly shot in cold blood on Tuesday night.

Bound, Gagged and Raped
A teenage girl was raped and her brother tortured after the duo were set upon by three masked men on the Pares Main Road, as they made their way home from computer class, on Monday night.
The men were traveling in to separate vehicles - a black jeep and a pick-up believed to have been purple. The girl was whisked away in the jeep, to an isolated spot in the village and reported that she was raped, at knife-point, by one of the men and then left to fend for herself.
Her brother, meanwhile, told officers that he was bound, gagged and placed in the pick-up and left in another unpopulated area.
Welcome to Antigua--Welcome to Rape, Bribes, Money-Laundering, Corruption
Last week, a teen-age girl who gave a videotaped interview accusing Prime Minister Lester Bird of having sex with her filed a lawsuit accusing Bird of statutory rape, abduction, conspiracy and sexual assault.
The same day, the British Broadcasting Corp. agreed to pay Bird damages of 50,000 pounds (about $78,000) after airing unfounded allegations that he spent government health funds on cosmetic surgery and was involved in gun-running and drug-trafficking.
This summer, copies of the girl's videotape made their way around the island. The tape contained criminal allegations against Bird and several public officials, including a junior finance minister, the commissioner of police and other members of the police force, and a handful of private citizens.
The girl, Monique Kim Barua, said she met Bird and his younger brother, Ivor Bird, who was convicted of cocaine-smuggling seven years ago, at a party in 1999 and had a sexual relationship first with Ivor Bird, then with the prime minister. She was 12 at the time. She also alleged that she made payments for cocaine deals on behalf of the prime minister, his brother and a governing party senator.

When it collapsed in 2009, over $7 billion in investments disappeared in what one U.S. judge would call “one of the most egregious criminal frauds ever presented to a trial jury in federal court.” TD banked Stanford and his Antiguan bank for 18 years, starting in 1991, helping him move money from his clients in the U.S. and South America – to accounts he controlled in Toronto. According to prosecutors Stanford bribed Antiguan officials with money, free flights and “expensive Super Bowl tickets” to run interference and keep his operation from being disclosed to U.S. regulators. By 1999, the U.S. government was fed up with Antigua and Stanford’s relationship.
The girl was whisked away in the jeep, to an isolated spot in the village and reported that she was raped, at knifepoint, by one of the men and then left to fend for herself.

The man is Rupert Edwars, fondly known as 'Pert', known to be a quiet and respectable member of the community in which he lives on New Street.
